Frozen Pipes
Today I woke up and got my son ready to go to Gymnastics at the YMCA. He loves to get out of the house everyday, as do I.
My husband who works late hours, told me that it was super cold outside and to be careful. I got into the car, and started it up - boy it sounded horrible. I turned on the radio to hear the weather - it was 12 below!!! After allowing the car a few moments to warm, I backed it up into the street. When I shifted it into Forward, the car just rolled backwards because it was too cold. Finally it caught and we went forward.
After gymnastics we got back in the car and headed home. We got home and after getting settled inside, my husband came downstairs to say hi. He told me that the hot water wasn’t working upstairs - I thought that it was the hot water heater, but the hot water was working just fine in the kitchen. I checked the spare bath and the laundry room which are all located on the same side of the house, and are just below the bath upstairs. Sure enough, we had no hot water in either place but we were getting cold water!
I researched what to do for frozen pipes, and set up heaters around the area where the pipes were, my husband checked the basement for issues there, and found that the basement was warmer than the spare bath which is where the pipes probably froze in the first place.
Finally the water started running in the lower bath and laundry room around 2pm and just now (6pm EST) our water upstairs just started running hot! It has been a long ordeal (it started at around 10:30am), but the worst might not be over as the weather is predicted to be just as cold if not colder tonight and tomorrow, with lows around negative 12+!
We will keep the warm water running through the night and hopefully we will have no frozen pipes in the morning.
At least now the rest of the house is pretty warm and I can give my son his bath. I love having hot water and heat :)
regarding frozen pipes .. You have make sure that all exposed water lines in your house are properly insulated and maintained before winter comes..
